What is hair loss?
Hair loss is the transiently increased apoptosis of the hair in telogen phase (Telogen Effluvium Hair Loss). Patients report the intense daily hair loss.
Which is the clinical picture of hair loss?
Normally, 80-90% of the hair is in the anagen phase, 5% in the catagen and 10-15% in telogen. 50-100 hair are daily shed. At hair loss or telogen trichoroia, a lot more hair is shed daily and the percentage of telogen hair is increased.
What are the most common causes of hair loss?
In women the most common cause is pregnancy, discontinuation of contraception or a strict diet. Other causes are a surgery, a heavy injury, high fever or a strong mental load (stress).
The etiological agent is usually preceded by 6-16 weeks and leads to a rapid transition from the anagen to the telogen phase.
How is the diagnosis of hair loss performed?
The diagnosis for hair loss will be based on history, clinical picture, the trichogram and the appropriate laboratory tests in order to rule out other possible causes.
Which is the course and treatment of hair loss?
The rule is complete regrowth of hair.
No treatment is usually needed.
Your dermatologist will however give you the appropriate products in order to expedite this process.
At our clinic, the digital trichogram FOTOFINDER is applied to the patients with hair loss, to better monitor their progress and to treat the problem rapidly and efficiently.
What is the trichogram?
The trichogram belongs to the non-invasive methods of diagnosis of alopecia and it is a major examination in the workup of non cicatricial forms of alopecia.
It allows the observation of the morphology of the hair root and the hair shaft.
Digital trichogram FOTOFINDER that we use in the clinic is the latest non-invasive method for diagnosing alopecia, which uses digital technology for photography and computer software analysis of the findings of the examination.
This process provides a safer assessment of the progress of the patient and a better and more effective treatment of the disease.
How is the trichogram performed?
Taking pictures in a default scalp area at certain intervals is required, followed by the processing of information through a specialized software on the computer.
It can be used to monitor the androgenetic and diffuse alopecia. The performance of the test is carried out 3 to 5 days after the shampooing of the patient.
What does the trichogram shows us?
Digital trichogram shows exactly the percentage of hairs that are in anagen, in catagen and telogen phase, the density and the dystrophic hair.
In the anagen phase, 80-95% of the hair is found at a normal scalp.
At this stage, the hair follicle's activity is strong and the hair root exhibits an increased diameter.
The telogen stage corresponds to the resting phase, in which the follicle is inactive and thus the gradual hair loss.
Normally at this stage, 10-18% of the hair is on the scalp.
