Molluscum contagiosum is a self-limiting viral skin infection caused by POX viruses. It appears quite often in children.
What is the clinical course of it?
The disease of molluscum contagiosum is usually characterized by solitary or multiple omphalos papules in the color of the skin.
The majority of lesions exhibit a keratin plug which attaches to a proximal lesion imprint. Light pressure on the damage is causing extrusion of the central plug.
The most common localization areas are the face, eyelids, the neck, the trunk and especially the armpit.
In most patients who have a good immune system, the lesions last up to six months and then disappear automatically.
What is the treatment?
In healthy children, the disease of Molluscum Contagiosum recedes automatically and does not need any treatment. However it is necessary to avoid direct skin contact with people suffering from Molluscum Contagiosum.
In children where the disease persists or spreads, treatment is necessary and removal of the lesion with a special gripper is usually applied or cryotherapy of the lesions is being performed.
